A FIRST UNIFYING WORKSHOP

The first Convergence Network workshop was held on February 24th 2014. The workshop brought together about 45 participants including 14 researchers and representative from eight Quebec’s departments and 6 industries. It has demystified the role of the Network and showcased the philosophy and mechanisms of joint research. The floor was given to government partners to demonstrate the use of geomatics in their departments and mention their needs in R & D. Four common themes were identified:

  • Collaborative mapping
  • LiDAR
  • Big Data
  • Spatial BI

The first two themes have already led to targeted workshops (see below).

We invite you to read the workshop report for all the details (available to our members only, in french).

The Convergence Network
Bring together experts for better innovation

WORKSHOP ON VGI AND COLLABORATIVE MAPPING

A first discussion group on collaborative mapping met on June 19 and July 15 at the Université Laval. Two project ideas emerged from the discussions: :

  • Macro-level thinking on collaborative mapping in government. Impact study / mechanisms / models of governance / legal issues related to data production and updates in a collaborative way.
  • Collaborative mapping project integrating social networks data and/or sensor networks data. A Project that would question the process and the technical aspects of collaborative mapping.

The workshop report is available in our Members Area (in French only).

Discussions on this topic will continue in the coming weeks. You would like to join the discussion? Contact us !

WORKSHOP ON LIDAR

A first think tank on the LiDAR theme met on July 16th . The objectives of the meeting were to identify priority research directions and explore the possibilities of projects in partnership.

Discussions revealed that LiDAR technology, its underlying concepts and possible applications are still greatly unknown. An initial work of democratization, education and training is essential. The following needs were identified:

  • promote the technology in order to expand the user community;
  • train and educate users:
    • on data processing and quality control;
    • on their real needs in terms of resolution/accuracy;
  • establish standards (quality control and data processing).

The workshop report is available in our Members Area (in French only).

Discussions will continue in the coming weeks. You would like to join the discussion? Contact us !

REMINDER: A SHOWCASE TO FOLLOW UP ON THE RESEARCH PROJECTS

One of the Network key objectives is to facilitate and accelerate technology transfer. In this context, we would like to advertise current or completed research projects with potential for technology transfer to our partners or for which you would like to follow through.

These projects could possibly be the subject of technology transfer projects, with matching funding, bridging the gap between completion of research and technology adoption by end users.

We invite you to take advantage of this opportunity and to send us information about your project using the provided form.

CONFERENCE ON HEALTH GEOMATICS

On the sideline of the Geoconference 2014, the Convergence Network will host a full day conference presenting the latest researches and innovations in health geomatics on October 8th, 2014. Among the topics discussed:

-Mobile and multimodal technologies to help persons with reduced mobility
- Microgeomatics and home healthcare
- GIS to support epidemiological simulations
- Spatial BI technologies in environmental health
- Geomedecine

Register now to benefit from the early registration rates (August 8, 2014).

FOR MEMBERS

Do not forget to visit the Members Area of our website.

You will find the minutes of meetings and workshops, promotional materials, the funding program watch editions, etc.
WEBINARS

The Network will continue the webinar series that began in January with a webinar per month starting in August.

These webinars introduce the Network members and allow them to share their expertise, their activities and their research interests to foster collaboration and partnership within the Network.

You can watch the webinars given by Rodolphe Devillers and Geoffrey Edwards.

If you are interested in hosting a webinar about your work and research interests, do not hesitate to contact us.
