Sylvie Daniel, member of the Convergence Network, recently obtained a Projet de recherche en équipe grant from the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et Technologies (FRQNT). The grant will allow for the development of new hydrographic survey solutions using autonomous vehicles adapted to arctic regions.

The 2018 International Geographical Union Regional Conference, August 6 to 10, 2018, Quebec City

The 2018 International Geographical Union Regional Conference will be held at the Québec City Convention Centre, from August 6th to August 10th, 2018.

Under the theme Appreciating Difference, the conference will bring reflections and exchanges on the diversity of our contemporary world and on the challenges related to it. Of course this diversity is not in itself a threat, as environmental dangers, technological risks or climate change can be, but a useful resource still waiting to reveal its full potential. Among the questions that could be discussed, let us mention:

  • human relations to Nature and their cultural, technological and political mediation;
  • social dynamics within multilingual or multicultural political entities;
  • current reality of native communities;
  • regionalism in the era of globalization;
  • the impact, cost and politics of environmental and climatic changes, and
  • human migrations of any scale and any causes that recompose the social mosaic anywhere in the world.

Call for applications: research chairs & scholarships Sentinelle Nord-Université Laval

As part of Sentinel North (SN), the UL office of the Vice Rector of Research and Innovation is investing $3 million over five years (2017 to 2022) in a first competition for new research chairs. The SN research chair program aims to attract both accomplished and promising new researchers to UL to strengthen the institution’s research capacity in SN’s strategic priority areas. These new chairs are designed for Canadian and international candidates that are not currently professors at UL. Nominations must be submitted by UL Faculty Deans by June 26, 2017.

Sentinel North also seeks to recruit outstanding young researchers at UL through a series of doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships that encourage the development of the experts needed to address the complex challenges and opportunities of the changing North. These excellence scholarships are offered to Canadian and international students willing to start or pursue research projects as part of the Sentinel North research program. The first deadline for submission is May 10, 2017.

New Data Mining Methods for Geospatial Big Data

A PhD position is available at the Department of Geomatics Sciences of Laval University. During the project, the student will design and develop new software solutions to process and analyze big geospatial data. These solutions will be based on the most recent innovations in big data, artificial intelligence (i.e. machine learning) and data mining techniques.

The candidate should have a background in computer science or in geomatics, with skills in software development. The candidate should also have an interest for data analysis and data mining methods, for machine learning and for geospatial applications.

The PhD position is supported by a scholarship of 18 000$/year, over three years.

2017 CIDCO Symposium – May 8th – 10th 2017

The 4th CIDCO Symposium will be held in Rimouski from May 8th to May 10th, 2017.

The first day will be devoted to a workshop on the specifications of a hydrographic survey. The Symposium will take place on May 9th and 10th.

The Symposium will address the following themes:
- Hydrographic survey contract design, including terms for quality assurance
- Automatic calibration of Multibeam systems parameters

ISPRS Geospatial Week workshop on photogrammetric 3D reconstruction for geo-applications – September 2017

PhotoGA 2017 will provide an opportunity and platform for all professionals involved in photogrammetric 3D reconstruction to share research ideas and results, foster and enhance cooperation, draw inspirations and maximize potentials. It will gather experts from photogrammetry, remote sensing, and computer vision from both academia and industry. The workshop will be held at the Wuhan University (China) on September 21st and September 22nd.

The fifth edition of EnvisionGEOMATICS will be held in Sherbrooke, Canada, from October 17th to October 19th, 2017. The conference, organized by the Centre de géomatique du Québec (CGQ) and the Association de géomatique municipale du Québec (AGMQ), will welcome more than 50 speakers, 30 exhibitors and 250 participants.
